ANNOUNCEMENT, SEPTEMBER 15, 2021 – Innovate Edmonton has set a bold vision – to position Edmonton as a global innovation capital by fostering a culture of innovation at every level in Edmonton. To lead these efforts, Innovate Edmonton welcomes Director, Strategic & Operational Growth Barbara McKenzie. Reporting to the CEO, McKenzie oversees government and agency relations, fund development and facilities and is responsible for uniting Edmontonians around innovation and making local innovation successes visible to the wider community.
“Innovate Edmonton is the public face of Edmonton’s urban innovation ecosystem,” said Innovate Edmonton CEO Catherine Warren. “In her role, Barbara will be instrumental in connecting companies with municipal assets and connecting our municipality to home-grown innovations for sustainable urban development and placemaking. Together, we will support and advance innovation in the public realm, make local innovations visible to the public and foster Edmonton’s innovation identity and pride.”
As Director, Strategic & Operational Growth, McKenzie is responsible for corporate planning and performance benchmarking, fundraising and alignment with external groups, locally, nationally and internationally. This new role also focusses on innovation positioning, especially as it relates to downtown vibrancy, placemaking, Edmonton’s Economic Action Plan and Innovate Edmonton’s creative co-working business space.

About Barbara McKenzie
Barbara Engelbart McKenzie is a leader, entrepreneur and has held numerous executive roles at government, not-for-profit and for-profit organizations. An experienced tech entrepreneur, Barbara also supports local innovators by providing coaching and support to help them grow their businesses.
Barbara has an EMBA from Quantic School of Business and Technology, a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Alberta School of Business, as well as a diploma in marketing from NAIT and several designations in project management, communications, and economic development.
Barbara has won awards for her work in marketing, communications, economic development, and project management. She currently participates Edmonton Regional Innovation Network Steering Committee, NAIT Entrepreneurship Program Advisory Committee, the Red Deer College CIM-TAC Advisory Board and is the Vice-Chair of the Christmas Bureau of Edmonton Board.
